The Dusky Moorhen is a common and conspicuous water bird found in freshwater wetlands across Australia and New Guinea. It is characterized by its entirely dusky-black plumage, a prominent red frontal shield and bill with a yellow tip, and yellow legs. This species is often seen in urban parks.
Where to spot
Widespread across Australia (except arid interior) and parts of New Guinea. Inhabits freshwater lakes, ponds, swamps, and rivers with emergent vegetation, often in urban parks.
How to spot
Look for its uniform dark plumage, bright red frontal shield, and yellow legs. It is often quite tame and easily observed in urban areas. Watch for its constant tail-flicking, revealing white undertail feathers. Listen for its loud, clucking calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Primarily active during the day, especially mornings and late afternoons.
