Endemic to the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Inhabits dense lowland and hill primary rainforests, often near streams or damp areas.
How to spot
This is a very shy and elusive bird of dense forest. Observation requires extreme patience and quiet. Listen for its deep, resonant calls, which may be the only indication of its presence. Stay alert for movement in the undergrowth.
When to spot
Year-round resident. It is most active during the early morning and late afternoon, when it may be heard calling.

Unlike many waterhens that primarily inhabit wetlands, the Sulawesi Waterhen is largely a forest bird, preferring dense, damp jungle and venturing only occasionally to water sources.
