Spotted
The Sulawesi Waterhen (Amaurornis isabellina) is a large, terrestrial rail endemic to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. It is characterized by its uniform brownish-isabelline plumage and strong legs, adapted for life in forest undergrowth.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Inhabits dense lowland and hill primary rainforests, often near streams or damp areas.
How to spot
This is a very shy and elusive bird of dense forest. Observation requires extreme patience and quiet. Listen for its deep, resonant calls, which may be the only indication of its presence. Stay alert for movement in the undergrowth.
