Spotted
Lewin's Rail is a small to medium-sized rail, often heard but rarely seen, found in swampy grasslands and dense vegetation across parts of Australasia and Southeast Asia. It has a cryptic brown and black-barred plumage, with a reddish cap and short, stout bill. This secretive bird is a master of camouflage.
Where to spot
Fragmented distribution across Australia (eastern, southern), New Guinea, Indonesia (parts of Sumatra, Java, Lesser Sundas), and the Philippines. Inhabits swamps, reedbeds, wet grasslands, and dense undergrowth near water.
How to spot
Extremely secretive. Best identified by its distinctive calls, which include a rapid, staccato 'kip-kip-kip' or 'rattle' call, often accelerating. Patience is key; stake out a dense marshy area at dawn or dusk and listen carefully.
When to spot
Year-round in its resident range. Most active at dawn and dusk.

Despite being an adept flyer over short distances, Lewin's Rail is more often encountered by its distinctive calls, as it spends most of its time hidden deep within dense marshy vegetation.
