Spotted
Allen's Gallinule is a small, migratory water bird found in freshwater wetlands across sub-Saharan Africa. Males in breeding plumage are striking with an iridescent purplish-blue body, chestnut back, and a red bill with a yellow tip. This species is a beautiful but often secretive inhabitant of dense marshes.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa. Breeds in freshwater marshes and swamps, often with floating vegetation. Migrates widely during the dry season.
How to spot
Look for its small size and, if male in breeding plumage, the vibrant purplish-blue body and chestnut back. It is often secretive, hiding in dense vegetation, but may walk on floating lily pads. Listen for its distinctive 'chick-chick-chick' call or a quiet 'purr.'
When to spot
Year-round in parts of its range, but highly seasonal and nomadic in others, following rainfall. Best observed during the wet season when breeding.

This small gallinule is remarkably capable of long-distance migration, undertaking extensive journeys across Africa, often arriving suddenly in seasonal wetlands after rains.
