Spotted
The Least Seedsnipe is the smallest and most widespread of the seedsnipes, found across the high Andes and Patagonia. It is a cryptic, plump bird that feeds on plant matter.
Where to spot
High-altitude grasslands, puna, and dry steppes across the Andes from Ecuador to Tierra del Fuego, and coastal Patagonia.
How to spot
Scan open, often barren, high-altitude plains or coastal steppes. Look for its short legs and plump body as it scurries between vegetation. Its camouflage is excellent; listening for its soft 'coo' can help.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round. More conspicuous during the breeding season when males might call more frequently. Most active during daylight.

Despite its small size, the Least Seedsnipe is incredibly hardy, surviving in harsh, cold environments. Its soft, dove-like calls are often the first indication of its presence.
