Spotted
The Semipalmated Dowitcher is a medium-sized shorebird known for its characteristic 'sewing machine' feeding motion and distinctive bill. It is found throughout the Americas.
Where to spot
Breeds in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of North America; migrates extensively to coastal mudflats and saline wetlands across North, Central, and South America for winter.
How to spot
Look for it wading in shallow water, rapidly probing the mud with its long, straight bill in a continuous 'sewing machine' motion. Listen for its distinctive 'tu-tu-tu' call.
When to spot
Best observed during spring and autumn migration at muddy shorelines. Summer in northern breeding grounds, winter in southern non-breeding grounds.

Its name 'semipalmated' refers to the partial webbing between its toes, while 'dowitcher' likely comes from its long, straight bill and head-bobbing feeding style, resembling a 'do-witch' motion.
