Spotted
The Pin-tailed Snipe is a medium-sized, migratory snipe found across Asia and Australasia, named for its narrow, stiff outer tail feathers. It is a secretive bird of wetlands.
Where to spot
Breeds in wetlands and bogs across northern Eurasia; migrates to wetlands, rice paddies, and damp grasslands across South, Southeast Asia, and Australasia for winter.
How to spot
Scan marshy areas and wet grasslands. Often flushes suddenly from cover. In flight, the 'pin' tail feathers might be discernible, and listen for the characteristic drumming sound of its display.
When to spot
Best observed during spring and autumn migration in its extensive range. Summer in northern breeding grounds, winter in southern non-breeding grounds.

The 'pins' in its tail are highly modified feathers that produce a whirring or drumming sound during its aerial display flights, similar to a Common Snipe.
