The Grey-breasted Seedsnipe is a stocky, ground-dwelling bird of the high Andes, known for its mottled grey and brown plumage which offers excellent camouflage. It is a vegetarian shorebird.
Where to spot
High-altitude puna grasslands, bogs, and rocky slopes in the Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
How to spot
Requires patient scanning of open, high-altitude grasslands and barren areas. Its camouflage is superb, so look for subtle movements as it walks and pecks at vegetation. Listen for its soft, cooing calls.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its highland range. Most active during daylight, often found foraging in small groups.
