Spotted
The Red-capped Plover is a small, widespread shorebird found across Australia and New Zealand, easily identified by the male's vibrant rufous crown and nape. It inhabits coastal and inland saline wetlands.
Where to spot
Found on coastal sandy beaches, mudflats, saline lakes, and inland salt pans across Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand.
How to spot
Scan sandy beaches, mudflats, or salt lake margins. The male's bright rufous cap is unmistakable. Females are duller but still have a reddish tinge. Look for its characteristic 'stop-and-run' foraging.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round throughout its extensive range. Most active during daylight hours, often foraging at the water's edge.
Despite its small size, this plover is fiercely territorial during the breeding season, aggressively defending its nest from intruders, including much larger birds.
