Spotted
The Laysan Albatross is a medium-sized albatross of the North Pacific, easily recognized by its dark upperparts, white underparts, and a distinctive dark eye patch. It is a graceful flyer, spending most of its life at sea but returning to remote islands to breed. This species is known for its long lifespan and strong pair bonds.
Where to spot
Breeds mainly on the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, with smaller colonies on islands off Japan (e.g., Torishima) and Mexico (e.g., Guadalupe Island). Ranges widely across the North Pacific Ocean.
How to spot
Look for its dark back and upperwings contrasting with a white head and body, and a prominent dark patch around its eye. Observe its graceful, soaring flight over the ocean. Visit accessible breeding colonies (e.g., Midway Atoll, parts of Kauai) for close-up views.
When to spot
Present on breeding islands from November to June. Best observed during the breeding season when adults are present at colonies. During non-breeding, they are pelagic and best seen on offshore boat trips.
