Spotted
The Tristan Albatross is a critically endangered large albatross, closely related to the Wandering Albatross, but distinguishable by subtle plumage differences and its restricted breeding range. It is primarily white with dark wings and a pinkish bill. This species faces severe conservation challenges, particularly from longline fishing.
Where to spot
Breeds almost exclusively on Gough Island in the South Atlantic Ocean, with a very small number on Inaccessible Island. Forages in the central South Atlantic Ocean.
How to spot
Look for its predominantly white body, black upperwings, and pinkish bill with a pale tip. Distinguish from Wandering Albatross by its generally darker upperwings and more restricted range. Observations are extremely difficult and usually require specialized expeditions.
When to spot
Breeding cycles are biennial, with egg-laying from December to January. Best observed during pelagic trips in the central South Atlantic, though sightings are rare due to its endangered status and remote habitat. Access to Gough Island is highly restricted.
