Spotted
The Grey-headed Albatross is a medium-sized albatross of the Southern Ocean, characterized by its distinctive grey head and neck, black bill with a bright yellow stripe along the top and bottom, and black feet. It is a highly pelagic species, known for its agile and swift flight in strong winds.
Where to spot
Breeds on sub-Antarctic islands across the Southern Ocean, including South Georgia, Campbell Island, Macquarie Island, Marion Island, and Crozet Islands. Ranges widely across the Southern Ocean, circumpolarly.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive grey head and neck, black upperparts, white underparts, and the black bill with a prominent yellow stripe along both culmen (upper) and tomial (lower) edges. Observe its agile, swift, and graceful flight, often flying close to waves. Requires pelagic trips for observation.
When to spot
Breeding cycles are biennial, with egg-laying in October-November. Best observed during pelagic trips in the Southern Ocean, especially around its breeding islands during the austral summer. Often seen following ships.
