Spotted
The Tepui Nightjar is a fascinating species named for its habitat in the unique tabletop mountains (Tepuis) of South America. Like other nightjars, it is an elusive nocturnal insectivore with superb camouflage.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Tepui highlands of northern South America, primarily found in Venezuela, Guyana, and parts of northern Brazil, in montane forests and shrubby areas.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive calls, which are often heard during twilight in its montane habitat. Observing it requires visiting its remote habitat and using a spotlight at night to look for eye-shine or silhouetted flight.
When to spot
Active primarily at dusk, dawn, and throughout the night when foraging for insects. It remains camouflaged during the day, making it difficult to spot.
Its specific habitat, the isolated Tepuis, makes it a unique and specialized species, adapted to high-altitude, often cloud-forest, environments.
