Spotted
The Papuan Dwarf Kingfisher is a tiny, brilliant kingfisher found on New Guinea and surrounding islands. It is characterized by its rufous head and back, contrasting with iridescent blue wings and a red bill, inhabiting dense lowland forests.
Where to spot
Distributed across New Guinea and some nearby islands, including Aru Islands and Biak. Inhabits humid lowland rainforests, often near small streams or damp areas.
How to spot
Look for its small, colorful form moving through the undergrowth or perching low on branches. Its vibrant colors can be hard to spot in the shadows, but its rapid flights are often noticeable. Listen for its high-pitched 'tseet' calls.
