Spotted
The Chestnut-bellied Kingfisher is a species with distinct coloration, featuring a bright blue back and wings, a white collar, and a warm chestnut belly. It is endemic to a single island.
Where to spot
Found only on the island of Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu. It inhabits mature primary and secondary rainforests, from sea level up to mountainous regions.
How to spot
Search for it in the mid-story and canopy of dense forest. It can be quite shy, so careful observation and listening for its calls are essential. Its unique chestnut underside is a key identification feature.
When to spot
Active during daylight, often most vocal and visible during the cooler parts of the day. It is a resident species, observable year-round.
This kingfisher demonstrates an adaptability to different altitudes, being found from coastal areas up to considerable elevations within its limited island range.
