The Japanese White-eye is a common and widespread species native to East Asia. It is a typical white-eye with green plumage and a prominent eye-ring.
Where to spot
Native to Japan, Korea, northeastern China, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Inhabits various habitats including forests, woodlands, parks, gardens, and cultivated areas.
How to spot
Look for its bright white eye-ring, yellowish throat, and olive-green upperparts. Often found in active flocks, foraging for insects and nectar. Listen for its clear, twittering calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round in much of its range; some northern populations are migratory. Active during the day. Easily observed throughout the year.
This species is sometimes introduced to other regions (e.g., Hawaii) where it can become an invasive species due to its adaptability.
