Spotted
The Chestnut-bellied Rail is a medium-sized rail found in New Guinea and parts of northern Australia. It is characterized by its dull olive-brown upperparts and distinctive chestnut-colored belly, often inhabiting dense vegetation near water. This secretive bird is more often heard than seen.
Where to spot
Found in New Guinea, the Aru Islands, and northern Queensland (Australia), specifically on the Cape York Peninsula. Inhabits dense vegetation in mangroves, swamp forests, and coastal thickets.
How to spot
Look for its dark upperparts and the diagnostic chestnut belly. It is generally shy and prefers dense cover. Learning its calls, which include a series of accelerating 'kek-kek-kek' notes or soft grunts, is often the best way to locate this elusive species.
When to spot
Year-round resident within its range. Most active at dawn and dusk.
While many rails are secretive, the Chestnut-bellied Rail is known to be slightly more arboreal than some of its ground-dwelling relatives, sometimes perching in low shrubs.
