The White-breasted Waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus) is a common and widely distributed rail across Asia. It is easily recognized by its dark upperparts and striking white face, neck, and breast, frequently seen foraging along the edges of wetlands.
Where to spot
Widespread across Asia, from India and China south to Indonesia. Found in a wide range of wetland habitats, including marshes, swamps, rice paddies, ponds, ditches, and even damp gardens.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive white breast and face contrasting with dark upperparts. They are often seen walking along water edges, foraging in open areas, or perched on low branches. Listen for their loud, cackling calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident, active throughout the day but often more conspicuous in the early morning and late afternoon.
