Spotted
The Junin Rail (Laterallus levraudi) is a critically endangered and highly localized rail found only at Lake Junin in the Andes of Peru. It is a small, dark bird adapted to high-altitude wetland life.
Where to spot
Endemic to the shores of Lake Junin and surrounding high-altitude marshes in the central Andes of Peru.
How to spot
Observation is extremely challenging. Focus on scanning the dense floating vegetation and reeds along Lake Junin's edges. Local guides familiar with its specific microhabitats may be essential. Patience is paramount.
When to spot
Year-round resident, but extremely difficult to find due to its rarity and dense habitat. Best chances might be early morning or late afternoon.
This species is one of the most geographically restricted birds in the world, with its entire known population confined to a single, high-altitude lake, making it highly vulnerable to environmental changes.
