Spotted
The Plain-flanked Rail (`Rallus wetmorei`) is a critically endangered, highly localized rail species endemic to a few small areas in northern Venezuela. It is a very shy and rarely seen inhabitant of specific coastal wetlands.
Where to spot
Extremely restricted to a few coastal brackish and freshwater wetlands in northern Venezuela, particularly around the states of Aragua and Carabobo.
How to spot
Observation is exceedingly difficult due to its extreme rarity and secretive nature. Focus on its known small habitat patches; listen for any potential calls, which are poorly documented. This species is often detected through surveys using mist nets or playback.
When to spot
Potentially active during dawn and dusk, but due to its rarity, any sighting is significant. Observing during the local wet season might increase activity.
This species is considered one of the rarest and least-known rails in the world, with only a handful of confirmed sightings in recent decades, highlighting its precarious conservation status.
