Where to spot
Widespread across Central and Southern Africa, from Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania south to South Africa. Inhabits open woodlands, savannas, grasslands, and cultivated areas.
How to spot
Look for its golden-yellow plumage and, in breeding males, the dark mask. They are often seen in pairs or small groups, foraging in trees or on the ground. Listen for their loud, distinctive calls.
