Spotted
The Yellow-collared Weaver is a distinctive weaver bird, with breeding males sporting a black head and a bright yellow collar around the neck. It is a common species of wetlands.
Where to spot
Found in East Africa, primarily in Kenya and Tanzania. Inhabits wetlands, papyrus swamps, and reedbeds, often near lakes and rivers.
How to spot
Look for its black head and distinct yellow collar (in breeding males). Search wetlands and marshy areas. Listen for their noisy, chattering calls from within the breeding colonies.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Breeding activity is most prominent during the rainy season, when males are brightly colored and active in nest building.
This species often builds its nests in reedbeds over water, making them less accessible to terrestrial predators.
