Spotted
The Waterfall Swift (*Hydrochous gigas*) is a highly specialized and exceptionally large swift unique to Southeast Asia. It is remarkable for its strong association with large waterfalls.
Where to spot
Highly localized to specific areas in Southeast Asia where large waterfalls are present, including parts of Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.
How to spot
Visit areas with significant waterfalls. Look for large, dark swifts flying directly through the spray or disappearing behind the water curtain into the rock face. Their presence is a strong indicator of a healthy waterfall ecosystem.
When to spot
Year-round in its specialized waterfall habitats. Most active around waterfalls during daylight hours.
This truly unique swift is the only bird species known to consistently roost and nest behind the roaring curtains of large waterfalls, providing an almost impenetrable and damp sanctuary for their eggs and chicks.
