Spotted
The Handsome Spurfowl is a distinctive and attractively patterned spurfowl found in the montane forests of East Africa. It is known for its rich chestnut plumage.
Where to spot
Inhabits montane forests, forest edges, and bamboo thickets in the Albertine Rift region of Central and East Africa (DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda).
How to spot
Listen for its loud, resonant calls, which can carry through dense forest. Look for them foraging in leaf litter on the forest floor. They are shy, so approach quietly and be patient.
When to spot
Most active during the early morning and late afternoon, often heard calling around these times.
Its common name, 'Handsome Spurfowl,' accurately describes its striking appearance, particularly the deep rufous-chestnut coloration that makes it stand out.
