The Altai Snowcock is a large, robust game bird inhabiting the rugged, high-altitude mountain ranges of Central Asia. Its plumage provides excellent camouflage against the rocky and snowy backdrop of its remote habitat.
Where to spot
Found on high-altitude rocky slopes, alpine pastures, and scree fields primarily in the Altai, Sayan, and other Central Asian mountain ranges.
How to spot
Requires significant hiking in challenging terrain. Look for them on open slopes and listen for their characteristic whistling calls, which often precede a sighting.
When to spot
Dawn and dusk are the best times to spot them as they feed. Summer offers the best access to their remote mountain habitats.
