Horsfield's Cuckoo (Cuculus saturatus) is a medium-sized migratory cuckoo found across parts of Asia and Australasia, known for its deep, resonant call. It is a classic example of a brood parasite, laying its eggs in the nests of various host species, particularly warblers.
Where to spot
Breeds across northern and eastern Asia, including Siberia, Northeast China, and Japan; winters in Southeast Asia, Indonesia, New Guinea, and parts of Australasia. Found in a wide range of forested habitats, from dense broadleaf forests to woodlands and plantations.
How to spot
Best identified by its characteristic two-note 'ko-koh' or three-note 'ko-ko-koh' call, often described as deep and hollow. Visually, it resembles the Common Cuckoo with grey upperparts and barred underparts, but often appears slightly darker. Look for it perched high in trees.
When to spot
Most vocal during its breeding season (spring and summer) in its northern range. Can be seen during migration (spring/autumn) and in wintering grounds (autumn/winter).
