The Black-bellied Malkoha is a large, striking cuckoo species found in Southeast Asia, recognizable by its largely dark, glossy black plumage and a prominent patch of bright red facial skin. It possesses a long, graduated tail.
Where to spot
Native to Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula, typically found in primary and mature secondary rainforests, from the understory to the mid-canopy.
How to spot
Look for its dark silhouette and the flash of red facial skin in the dense forest. It is often shy and deliberate in its movements. Listen for its low, hooting calls or a series of clucks.
When to spot
Active during the day, often moving quietly through the forest. Best seen in the calmer parts of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon. It is a resident species.
