The Green-billed Coucal is a rare and endangered species of coucal, endemic to Sri Lanka. It is characterized by its glossy black plumage, chestnut wings, and most notably, its bright pale green bill.
Where to spot
Endemic to the wet zone rainforests of southwestern Sri Lanka, particularly in fragmented forest patches like Sinharaja Forest Reserve.
How to spot
Focus on its distinctive pale green bill, which contrasts sharply with its dark plumage. Listen for its deep, hooting call. Due to its elusive nature, observation often requires patience, stealth, and a degree of luck in its specific forest habitat.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, but very shy and secretive. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon. Its rarity means any sighting is a stroke of luck, regardless of season.
This coucal is one of the most elusive birds in Sri Lanka, preferring dense forest habitats where it is notoriously difficult to observe. Its distinct green bill is a unique feature among coucals, making identification straightforward if seen well.
