Spotted
The Banded Bay Cuckoo is a distinctive medium-sized cuckoo characterized by its finely barred underparts and often elusive nature. Found across much of Southeast Asia and the Indian Subcontinent, it's more often heard than seen.
Where to spot
Widespread across the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and parts of Wallacea. It prefers deciduous and evergreen forests, bamboo groves, plantations, and dense scrub, typically in lowlands.
How to spot
Listen intently for its unique 'brain-fever' call, as it's the primary way to locate this shy bird. Once heard, scan the dense foliage of trees and bamboo, as it often perches motionless and can be difficult to spot.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during the breeding season, which varies by region but generally falls during the spring and summer months or the wet season, when its characteristic call is frequently heard.

Its repetitive and loud 'brain-fever' call, often accelerating and increasing in pitch, is famously associated with the onset of the breeding season in its range and can be quite hypnotic.
