Spotted
Hartlaub's Duck is a reclusive, medium-sized duck endemic to the rainforests and associated wetlands of West and Central Africa. It is distinguished by its dark plumage and a subtle yet diagnostic white facial patch.
Where to spot
Strictly found within tropical rainforests and associated wooded wetlands from Sierra Leone east to Uganda and south to northern Angola.
How to spot
Look for its predominantly dark brown or blackish plumage, which can appear uniform in poor light. The small but distinct white patch at the base of the bill, near the eye (lores), is the key identification feature. Often seen solitary or in pairs.
When to spot
A year-round resident throughout its range. Due to its secretive nature, observation can be challenging at any time, but is perhaps slightly easier during the breeding season when pairs are more active.

Unusually for a duck, Hartlaub's Duck prefers dense forest environments and small, shaded streams and ponds, making it one of the most secretive waterfowl species to observe.
