A medium-sized gamebird with a rounded body, rusty-brown face, and a distinctive horseshoe-shaped patch on its belly. It is often seen in coveys (small groups).
Where to spot
Agricultural land, grasslands, heathlands, and open fields across much of Europe and parts of Asia, with introductions in other parts of the world.
How to spot
Look for small coveys foraging in open fields or at field edges. While well-camouflaged, they can be flushed, flying low with rapid wingbeats. Listen for their distinctive 'kirr-ik' call.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed in early morning or late afternoon when they are most active, foraging on the ground.
