The Great Grey Owl is a magnificent, very large owl known for its impressive size, prominent facial disc, and piercing yellow eyes. Despite its large appearance, much of its bulk is insulating feathers.

Where to spot

Inhabits dense coniferous forests, boreal forests, and peat bogs, often near open hunting grounds. Its circumboreal range covers North America (Canada, Alaska, parts of northern US) and Eurasia.

How to spot

Look for its massive silhouette perched silently at forest edges or in open clearings. It's often remarkably approachable but should not be disturbed. Listen for its deep, resonant hoots.

When to spot

Primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, but often hunts during the day, especially in winter or when feeding young. Best observation times are dawn and dusk.
