Spotted
The Bearded Screech Owl is a small, rare owl found in the humid montane forests of southern Mexico and Guatemala. Its specific name 'barbarus' refers to its somewhat shaggy facial disc.
Where to spot
Humid montane evergreen forests and cloud forests in extreme southern Mexico (Chiapas) and western Guatemala.
How to spot
Listen for its soft, trilling call. Requires persistent effort and careful scanning of dense canopy in its high-altitude habitat, as it is very well camouflaged.
When to spot
Nocturnal. Best sought after dusk, especially during the breeding season when it is most vocal and responsive.
