Spotted
The Great Green Macaw is a majestic large macaw, predominantly green with a red forehead and blue on the lower back and rump. It is larger and paler green than the Military Macaw.
Where to spot
Humid evergreen forests, particularly areas with large emergent trees, found in Central America (Honduras to Panama) and northwestern South America (Colombia, Ecuador).
How to spot
Listen for their loud, deep calls, distinct from other macaws. Look for them in the canopy of tall trees, especially Almendro trees, or flying overhead. Patience is often required due to their shy nature.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon when foraging and flying between roosts.

The Great Green Macaw has a strong association with the Almendro tree (Dipteryx panamensis), whose hard nuts are a primary food source and whose cavities provide nesting sites.
