Spotted
The Military Macaw is a large, predominantly green macaw with a red forehead, blue flight feathers, and a bare white facial patch with fine black lines.
Where to spot
Humid subtropical forests, dry deciduous forests, and canyons, with a disjunct distribution across Mexico, and parts of the Andes in South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia).
How to spot
Look for them flying overhead, often in pairs or small groups. Their loud, harsh calls are a key indicator. They can also be seen at clay licks or feeding in tall trees.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active at dawn and dusk when flying to and from communal roosts.
