Look for its impressive size, blue-grey plumage, and its distinctive slow, deep wingbeats in flight. Often seen standing still at the water's edge or flying overhead.
When to spot
Year-round in southern areas, migratory in northern areas. Most active at dawn and dusk, but seen throughout the day.
