Spotted
The Green Heron is a small, stocky heron with a glossy, dark green-blue back and crown, and a rufous neck. It is a master of camouflage and often goes unnoticed in its wetland habitats.
Where to spot
Widespread across North, Central, and South America, inhabiting various wetland habitats including ponds, streams, marshes, and mangroves, especially those with dense overhanging vegetation.
How to spot
Look for its small size, hunched posture, and rich plumage. It often perches low over water, remaining motionless for long periods. Be patient and scan vegetated edges of water bodies. Its sharp 'skeow' call can also alert you to its presence.
When to spot
Year-round resident in warmer parts of its range, migratory in northern areas, arriving in spring for breeding. Most active at dawn and dusk, or during the day in shaded areas.

Green Herons are one of the few bird species known to use tools. They will drop bait (such as insects, berries, or breadcrumbs) onto the water surface to attract small fish, which they then swiftly snatch.
