Spotted
The Simple Whistler is a subtly plumaged bird found in parts of New Guinea and nearby islands, known for its unassuming appearance but characteristic whistled calls. It inhabits various forest types.
Where to spot
Widespread across New Guinea and several satellite islands, inhabiting lowland and montane forests, secondary growth, and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for its plain olive-brown upperparts and duller, often buffy or whitish, underparts, lacking any striking patterns. Listen for its clear, strong, and melodic whistled calls, which are often the best way to detect this bird.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal during the breeding season, but can be heard throughout the year, especially at dawn and dusk.
