Spotted
The Long-billed Shrikethrush is a distinctive and rather large shrikethrush found in New Guinea, known for its unusually long and slender bill. It typically inhabits the lower and mid-story of primary forests.
Where to spot
Found in lowland rainforests and hill forests across New Guinea. Prefers dense undergrowth and vine tangles.
How to spot
The most striking feature for identification is its long, decurved bill, unique among shrikethrushes. Look for its rufous-brown plumage and listen for its varied calls, which can be harsh or whistling.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the day, particularly in the mornings and late afternoons when foraging.
Its exceptionally long bill is specially adapted for probing into crevices and among leaf litter to extract invertebrates, its primary food source.
