Spotted
The Grey Teal is a highly nomadic and widespread dabbling duck found across Australia and New Zealand. Its subtle, muted plumage helps it blend into its diverse wetland environments.
Where to spot
Abundant in most freshwater habitats across Australia, New Zealand, and surrounding islands, including rivers, lakes, ponds, and even temporary floodwaters.
How to spot
Look for a small, plain grey-brown duck with a pale throat and a distinctive red eye. In flight, a bright green speculum bordered by white is a good identifier. Listen for their high-pitched 'creek' calls.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round throughout its range. Their nomadic nature means they can appear in new areas after rainfall. Best seen during feeding hours in the morning and late afternoon.

Grey Teals are opportunistic breeders, capable of nesting at any time of year in response to rainfall and favorable water conditions, making them well-adapted to Australia's unpredictable climate.
