Spotted
The Taiga Bean Goose is a large, dark brown goose with an orange-and-black bill and orange legs. It prefers forested wetlands and bogs in its breeding range.
Where to spot
Breeds in the taiga forests of northern Europe and Asia, wintering in agricultural fields and wetlands across central and western Europe and eastern Asia.
How to spot
Look for them in stubble fields and meadows. Differentiate from other geese by its dark brown plumage, the specific pattern of orange and black on its bill (often with more orange than black), and orange legs. Listen for a distinctive 'ung-unk' call.
When to spot
Best seen during autumn and spring migration, and throughout the winter months in its temperate wintering grounds. Observing them in their remote breeding grounds is difficult.

Unlike many geese that prefer open habitats, the Taiga Bean Goose often breeds in taiga forests, giving it its common name and differentiating its habitat from the Tundra Bean Goose.
