Spotted
The Golden Swallow is a critically endangered and extremely rare swallow found in restricted montane areas of Hispaniola and Jamaica. It is notable for its iridescent golden-bronze upperparts.
Where to spot
Montane pine forests and high-altitude grasslands with scattered trees on the islands of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic, Haiti) and formerly Jamaica (likely extinct there).
How to spot
If seen, its striking iridescent golden-bronze upperparts are diagnostic. Look for it flying over open areas within montane forests or perching on dead snags. Any sighting is highly significant.
When to spot
Year-round resident, but sightings are extremely rare. Early mornings or late afternoons may offer the best chance.
