Where to spot
Lowland open areas, often near large rivers, lakes, and marshes, throughout tropical South America east of the Andes.
How to spot
Look for its iridescent blue-green back and pure white underparts, but most importantly, the prominent white patches visible on its wings, especially in flight. It often perches on snags or wires near water.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active during daylight hours, often foraging over water.
