Spotted
The South African Cliff Swallow is a medium-sized swallow with a distinctive pale rump and dark cap, frequently seen in large, social groups. It's known for its complex colonial nesting habits.
Where to spot
Endemic to Southern Africa, found in a variety of open habitats, including grasslands, savannas, and agricultural areas, always near suitable nesting structures like bridges, culverts, or rock faces.
How to spot
Look for large numbers of swallows congregating around bridges or culverts. Identify them by their pale rump and dark head. Listen for their chattering calls, especially near nesting sites.
When to spot
Primarily observed during the austral summer months (September to April) when they breed; they migrate north during the austral winter. Best seen during daylight hours.
