Where to spot
East Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan. Found in arid and semi-arid acacia bushland, thorn scrub, and open dry savannas.
How to spot
Look for the male's unmistakable golden-yellow and black plumage. They are often seen foraging on the ground or perching conspicuously on low bushes or termite mounds.
When to spot
Year-round resident, but can be nomadic in response to rainfall. Best observed during the breeding season when males are most active and colorful.
Males are among the most colorful birds in their range, using their brilliant plumage in striking courtship displays.
