Spotted
The Red-throated Pipit is a striking species, especially in breeding males who display a beautiful pinkish-red throat and breast. It is typically found in open, often wet, tundra and marshy habitats.
Where to spot
Breeds in the Arctic tundra across northern Eurasia and North America. Winters mainly in tropical Africa and South Asia, including Southeast Asia, favoring wet grasslands, marshes, and rice paddies.
How to spot
In breeding plumage, look for the rosy-red throat and breast, and bold streaking on the flanks. In non-breeding plumage, it is duller but look for bold streaks and a distinctive 'psip' or 'psst' flight call.
When to spot
Best observed during spring and autumn migration as they pass through various regions, sometimes in large numbers. Breeding males are most distinctive in summer on their northern territories.
