Spotted
The Violet-throated Starfrontlet is a large and striking hummingbird characterized by its brilliant iridescent green body and a dazzling violet gorget in males. It is a denizen of high-altitude Andean cloud forests.
Where to spot
Humid montane and cloud forests of the Andes, specifically found in Bolivia and parts of southeastern Peru. It prefers elevations typically ranging from 2,000 to 3,500 meters (6,500 to 11,500 feet).
How to spot
Look for them visiting large, often brightly colored, tubular flowers. They can be quite territorial, so watching for aggressive interactions with other hummingbirds around prime feeding spots can be fruitful.
When to spot
Best observed during daylight hours, particularly in the morning and late afternoon when they are actively feeding. They are resident birds in their habitat.

The 'starfrontlet' part of its name refers to the often brilliant, star-like iridescent patch on the forehead of many species in the *Coeligena* genus, which can be difficult to see without the right lighting.
