Spotted
The Long-tailed Antbird is a striking medium-sized antbird, notable for its exceptionally long, graduated tail and heavily streaked plumage. It inhabits the dense undergrowth of humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Eastern slope of the Andes, from northern Colombia south through Ecuador and Peru, into Bolivia.
How to spot
Search in the dense understory and bamboo thickets of humid montane cloud forests. Listen for its distinctive, often accelerating calls. Its long tail is a strong visual clue, especially when it is agitated.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon.
Its remarkably long tail, often held cocked, is a distinct feature that helps it navigate the dense understory while foraging for insects, providing balance and agility.
