Spotted
The Emerald Starling is a small, jewel-toned starling from West Africa, prized for its almost entirely iridescent emerald-green plumage that sparkles in the light. It is one of the most stunning starlings.
Where to spot
Found in West Africa, including countries like Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, and Ghana, inhabiting the canopy of primary and mature secondary rainforests.
How to spot
Its uniform brilliant emerald-green iridescence is the key. Scan the upper canopy of large forest trees. Listening for its soft, often high-pitched calls can help locate it.
When to spot
Most active during the early morning and late afternoon when foraging for fruits and insects. Resident and observable year-round.

Despite its vivid coloration, the Emerald Starling can be surprisingly difficult to spot in the dense forest canopy, where its green plumage provides excellent camouflage.
