Spotted
The Ashy Starling is a unique African starling, notable for its duller, ash-grey plumage, a striking contrast to the vibrant iridescence typical of many other glossy starlings. It has bright yellow eyes.
Where to spot
Endemic to East Africa, primarily found in Tanzania and Kenya, inhabiting dry acacia savannas, thornbush, and semi-arid grasslands.
How to spot
Its distinct ash-grey plumage with no iridescence, coupled with bright yellow eyes, makes it identifiable. Look for them foraging on the ground in dry, open country.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often seen foraging on the ground. Can be observed year-round within its resident range.

Unlike its iridescent relatives, the Ashy Starling relies on its more subdued coloration to blend into its dry, dusty habitat, making it less conspicuous.
